Growing Faith from Stories

Stories are important. They help us to explore the world in ways we can’t any other way. Who knows what may happen in a story? We might travel to distant lands, animals or trains might talk, we might fly, or even walk on the moon. Stories also teach us about how the world works and they give us words for things we didn’t know before. Bible stories create a kind of “vocabulary of faith”. We listen to the stories of God’s love for the world and learn that we are loved. We hear the stories of Jesus and learn to see the world as Jesus does. Whether you know these Bible stories or not, sharing them with your child is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Take some time each night to include a Bible story and a moment to pray with your child.

Below are listed several Bible story books for young children, all of them are readily available online. In addition you will find an activity and a prayer to share with your child.

Children’s Bibles
One of the best ways help your child learn the foundations of a life of faith is to incorporate these story in your nightly bedtime reading. Just a Bible story to your bedtime reading.

The following are good Bible storybooks for the
youngest ones:

  • Spark Story Bible by Patti Thisted Arthur (ages 4-7)
  • The Beginner Bible for Toddlers by Mission City Press (ages 3-5)
  • The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones    (ages 4-7)

Activity: Creating a story

Supplies
4 piece white paper
1 piece 8 ½ X 11 colored paper
Stapler
Crayons, markers, colored pencils or whatever you have on hand

To create the “book” cut white and colored 8 ½ X 11 paper, cut in half long ways.
Fold in half and staple to create the “book” (this will make 2)
Have your child draw a story
After the pictures are done, have them tell you the story and you can write the captions.

This is a great activity for when you are waiting at the doctors, making dinner (you can do the captions after dinner) or anytime.

Prayer:
Dear God
Thank you for stories.
Thank you for____________________
Amen.
